General Description

The Lead Custodian is responsible for supervising and participating in custodial activities to maintain the cleanliness, safety, and appearance of Emergence Health Network (EHN) facilities. This position performs routine and advanced custodial work while overseeing and coordinating the work of custodial staff. Duties include scheduling assignments, monitoring supply levels, training staff, and ensuring compliance with established cleaning protocols and safety standards. The Lead Custodian works under limited supervision and reports to the Custodial Manager.

This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Oversees daily operations of custodial staff to ensure timely and proper cleaning of facilities.
  • Cleans and maintains all assigned areas in accordance with agency standards and schedules.
  • Conducts quality control inspections to verify completion and adequacy of custodial tasks.
  • Trains new custodians on proper cleaning methods, use of equipment, and safety protocols.
  • Maintains janitorial inventory and submits supply requests to Facilities Manager.
  • Coordinates shift schedules and ensures coverage for absences and emergencies.
  • Maintains cleanliness and minor maintenance of building fixtures, floors, walls, restrooms, and equipment.
  • Operates custodial machinery and tools including floor buffers, vacuums, and carpet cleaners.
  • Identifies maintenance or repair needs and reports them to the appropriate personnel.
  • Assists in planning custodial work for special events, inclement weather, or emergency situations.
  • Ensures compliance with OSHA, health regulations, and EHN sanitation policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent. Minimum two (2) years of custodial experience, including at least one (1) year in a lead or supervisory capacity preferred.

Experience with trauma-informed services; cognitive behavioral therapies, including DBT; and motivational therapies including the use of incentives, preferred.

Required Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of trauma-informed theories, principals, and practices (includes multi-faceted understanding of concepts such as community trauma, intergenerational and historical trauma, parallel processes, and universal precautions), preferred.

Physical Demands

Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 20 - 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis. Performs light to medium work involving walking or standing for extended periods. Must be able to lift and move 20 to 50 pounds regularly. Requires repetitive use of hands and tools with moderate dexterity and accuracy.

Special Certifications and Licenses

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be able to pass a TB, criminal background and drug screen.
